At this time, we need to take a hard look at what divides us. Maybe we need to stop separating our children by religion, schooling and wealth of the parents. Maybe we should enforce the rights to our two languages in all corners of the country. We certainly need to stop driving people out of their homes and forcing them to live on the streets. We have a responsibility to all of our citizens for their safety and wellbeing.
And let us stop talking mealymouthed platitudes to our aboriginal peoples. They are not indigenous (from here) but they came thousands of years earlier than the rest of us and they have rights in this land and to share its bounty. Truth and reconciliation need not take decades to resolve.
Hell, we have not even resolved the relationships between men and women in this country. Men are not all rampant rapists and women are not all sweet and pure. We have to separate morning after regrets from sexual aggression. It was hard to believe recently that some poorly-equipped men who lost their condom, during consensual sex, were being charged with rape. There is a pill for that.
And we should recognize that there is no such thing as systemic (in all parts) racism or sexism in the police forces or armed forces of this country. We still do not have large numbers of female soldiers, sailors, air personnel or police but the point has been made clear that there are rules of engagement between the sexes in these organizations and they need to be followed.
And what difference does a person’s color make? We benefit in so many ways by the mixed nature of our society. And some people want to discriminate? Why? Maybe, if there is anything left of this world in a couple hundred years, Canadians will be of so many mixed shades, they will need to check with the computers that will be running things to determine their racial ancestry. And we will be better for it!
