We are in that period when all the pundits take credit for how smart they were during the election campaign. Frankly, if most of them would fall on their swords, it would be more helpful. I have always considered myself more of a labourer in the field of politics than a pundit. It might be why some readers have complained about my suggestion that liberal leader Justin Trudeau losing his gamble, was a win for the liberal party.
The simple facts are that it will be far easier to rebuild the party than restore Justin Trudeau as Boy Wonder. He is a failure as an environmentalist. He is a failure as a feminist. He amuses world leaders rather than their having any confidence in him. He thinks he can run the liberal party rather than lead it.
We liberals have to face the facts. Trudeau cannot claim anything at the upcoming Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland. His promises of some future target for emissions are just a waste of time. When he proves his sincerity about saving our planet by setting an example, such as stopping the twinning of the Trans Mountain pipeline, maybe some of us will listen.
If he even understood feminism, he would be better off. His record with women in his cabinet is bad enough. His cronyism, his elitist attitudes, his autocratic manner, his poor selection in key cabinet positions, all tell us that he is not of the stuff of his famed father.
Justin Trudeau is an actor. He is playing the part of his father these days in hopes of besting him. And he fails. He is nowhere near as smart. He does not understand the job he has undertaken.
Trudeau lost the election, but the liberal party can still win. We will need help. We need the quiet support of our some of our more progressive MPs. We need to help ridings held by other parties to rebuild. We need to rebuild our federal liberal organizations in each province. It has to be a democratic party. We need to pay attention to the party’s opinion on policies. We need to let our ridings pick our candidates for the next federal election. We need a fund-raising organization run by the party. We have to get to work now.
