“My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends – it gives a lovely light!” Edna St. Vincent Millay – 1892 to 1950
Listen up boys and girls, what you see, is what you get. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is not his father. Justin is his own man. At the present, he is soaring. He holds the world in his hands and the world loves him. You cannot sully him. He is Teflon. He is armoured.
He is also human. We are getting used to his halting extemporaneous speaking style. His rhetoric is much better with a prepared text. He has yet to be tested in the cauldron of Parliament. We are waiting for the first time he really answers a question in that venue.
But the media still love him. Sure they are starting to put shots across his bow but you have to expect that or they would be fired. These silly people are saying that he is long on show and short on substance. You wonder that these nitwits think they are asking for a treatise on the economy when they ask Justin how things are today?
Our new Prime Minister Trudeau is nothing like Stephen Harper. The two men could not be less alike. And, as the Tories have reminded us many, many times, Justin has good hair though. He also has relative youth and an engaging smile. When did we ever see Stephen Harper do more than bare some teeth?
It is amusing to note that even when the Conservatives finally get to question our new prime minister in the Commons, they are likely to be pussy cats compared to how the New Democrats raked them. The really tough attacks on Trudeau will have to come from Premier Brad Wall in Saskatchewan. Wall is so obviously trying to position himself for the upcoming federal Conservative leadership.
The conundrum for New Democrats in parliament is how do they attack someone who is so obviously doing what they wanted to do. Do they have the patience to wait for the Liberals to screw up? Will Trudeau be constantly defending his choices for his cabinet?
Only the Conservatives in parliament will challenge the Liberals on pulling the F-18s from the Middle East where they have been helping trying to bomb the Islamic State back to the time of the Prophet. They would be smart though to observe how Britain’s Cameron and America’s Obama handled Canada’s pull-out and follow up accordingly.
There will be lots of pitfalls waiting for Justin Trudeau in the coming years, we will keep you apprised.
