There is nothing strange about it. Ontario Conservative Leader Tim Hudak can hate Toronto Mayor Rob Ford on his own time but publicly, the guy is his best buddy. It is all about the politics.
The people who voted for Ford as mayor last year are the same people as Tim Hudak and his Conservatives need to vote for them in the provincial election on October 6. Hudak would kiss Ford’s bare behind in the middle of Nathan Philips Square if Ford could guarantee those votes. (Luckily for Hudak, there are no guarantees!)
Whether the Ford brothers can really deliver much of their last year’s vote to anyone is a matter of conjecture. A great deal of buyers’ remorse has set in among Toronto voters. They now know that there is no gravy train at city hall for the Ford boys to end. It was all hot air. More recently, between screwing up a perfectly good transit plan for the city and their really dumb plans for the Toronto Docklands, the Fords might be lucky to get re-elected as councillors.
But no politician can count on that. You have to play the game that is on the table. Both Premier Dalton McGuinty and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath have also made nice with Mayor Ford. It would be bad manners and bad politics not to. McGuinty knows he has to hold the provincial seats he has in Toronto to keep his job as Premier. He does not win anything by fighting with the city’s mayor. Also Horwath has to look like a premier to her supporters. There is no win for her in pointing out the obvious with people like Ford.
Having spent much of our life in politics, we can report that when you see a politician, drape an arm around the shoulders of another politician and tell you what sterling character traits the person possesses, take it all with a grain of salt. It is probably B.S. All it means is that politician ‘A’ wants something from politician ‘B’ or vice-versa.
